Writing & Life

My job, calling, joy is writing. But writing is a solitary thing. I spend much of my time alone. Even when I’m with people I don’t talk a lot. Well, except when with other writers or when I have a story to tell.



Being alone isn’t so bad. I can focus on my work, take my time and do it right. Go back over it as much as I need, at least for now as no deadlines loom. But I can also get drawn back into old habits of snacking when I’m bored or even while I’m thinking.



Changing habits takes time and it takes thought. The thing that helps me the most is prayer. It helps me focus my attention on the task at hand and brings God’s power into play while I abstain from snacking.



In my last post I mentioned I had been diagnosed with diabetes. I am doing well and hope that within a few months it will have reversed itself. This is what the doctor and I are working towards. Yes, it is possible to reverse diabetes. I never knew that was possible, but the doctor assures me it is. For that I thank God and pray for His help in getting rid of it.



I’ve begun exercising again and am finding that this disease is very manageable. It amazes me how we let ourselves get in such a state. It also amazes me how gracious God is in helping us to change and recover from what we’ve gotten ourselves into.



I am so grateful for His faithfulness, for His abiding, constant presence in my life.



Thank You, Lord, for not abandoning me even when I think I deserve it. Thank You for helping me change and for blessing the work I am doing to change. I praise you for this job, for inspiration and direction and I pray that You will use it all for Your glory. In Jesus name, amen.

Bella’s Back!




Enjoy this fun interview with author Janice Thompson, where she shares the story-behind-the-story regarding Bella’s return.



Janice, welcome! I really enjoyed the Weddings by Bella series and am excited to read the spin-off series.



1. Can you tell us more about why you decided to write it?



Sure! (Thanks for hosting me, by the way!) When I wrote Fools Rush In (book one in the Weddings by Bella series) I knew I had something special on my hands. The characters really resonated with me, but there was more. I felt as if I’d created a world of real, wonderful, wacky people. Sure, I’d breathed life into them on the page, but they seemed to take it from there, springing to life and moving the story forward as they willed. I wrapped up the series with Swinging on a Star and It Had to be You, but my readers weren’t satisfied! At least once a week I got a letter from a fan saying, “Are there more? Please keep this story going!” I sent several of those letters to my editor, and before long she agreed that we should, indeed, keep the story going! That’s how the Weddings by Design story began. I’m so relieved to have more to offer. Since Fools Rush In went free on kindle, it has been downloaded nearly 300,000 times. Crazy! So, I have many, many new readers, aching for more!



2. How are these stories similar to the novels in the Weddings by Bella series?



This is a wedding-themed series, just like the first, and loaded with fun, quirky mishaps on the way to the altar! Readers will experience the same “feel” of Galveston Island and my ever-present humor, which drives the stories forward. I truly hope that readers pick up the first book in this new series and sigh with relief as they catch up with their favorite characters from the last series: Bella, D.J., Aunt Rosa, Uncle Laz, the three ladies from Splendora, Brock Benson, and so on. Here’s what the publisher had to say about the new series: “With her contagious humor and cast of quirky characters, Janice Thompson gives readers more of the bridal business drama they want in a brand-new series all about those long-suffering people who make beautiful weddings happen. 3. What sets this new series apart from the last one?



The Weddings by Design novels are told from the point of view of new characters. Book one, Picture Perfect, is about a wedding photographer named Hannah. Book two, The Icing on the Cake, is about a wedding cake designer named Scarlet. Book three, The Dream Dress, is about a dress designer named Gabi. Book four (yet unpublished) is about a wedding florist named Gina. Each of these ladies longs to work with the most fabulous wedding coordinator on the island—Bella (Rossi) Neeley, so everything loops back to Club Wed, just like the first series.



4. When does the new series release?



Book one, Picture Perfect, is already available on amazon. The kindle version will be ready for download on February 15th. (Happy Valentine’s Day, y’all!) 5. Can you tell us about Picture Perfect, the first book in the series?



Ooo, I’d love to! The synopsis should answer any questions:

My life has been a series of almosts.

Take, for instance, the time I almost made the cheerleading squad in high school but lost out to my archnemesis, Jacquie Practically-Perfect-in-Every-Way Goldfarb. Then there was the time Matt Hudson, the hunkiest football player at my high school, almost asked me to the prom but ended up going with Jacquie instead. Oh, and we can’t forget the time I almost got a photographer’s dream job, shooting superstar Brock Benson’s wedding. Yep. Another almost. That time, the opportunity of a lifetime slipped through my fingers and into the open palms of my chief competitor, Drew Kincaid of Kincaid Photography.

Some people are haunted by memories of things they’ve done. Me? I’m haunted by all of the things I nearly accomplished but missed by a quarter of an inch. That’s why, when faced with yet another unbelievable opportunity—a profile piece in Texas Bride magazine to promote my new Galveston-based photography business—I couldn’t blow it. No more almosts for me. This time I would hit the finish line a winner. My meeting with the Texas Bride reporter would transform my career and propel me into the limelight, winning me the favor of the island’s top wedding planner, Bella Neeley. And I would do it all with a smile on my face and confidence in my stride.

From his mansion up in heaven, Grandpa Aengus smiled down on me, his gold-capped front tooth gleaming like the precious stones in the pearly gate. I could sense his pleasure as I made up my mind to do the McDermotts proud. Like my warring ancestors of yesteryear, I would fight to the finish, wielding my bloody sword—er, my two-thousand-dollar digital camera with stellar resolution and optical zoom—until I took the prize. I would come out a victor in the end, or make a fool of myself trying.

Either way, I wouldn’t go down without a fight. A true McDermott never did.

Life!


        Life often brings stress. I’ve learned recently that the way we deal with stress can cause problems for us. I have stayed away from the obvious; fighting with loved ones, alcohol, tobacco, etc. but fell into the trap of using food for comfort.


        Now I have been diagnosed with diabetes. My first reaction was, NOOOO! Screaming inside to God that I don’t want this, I can’t handle this, I won’t accept this!


        Finally, after calming down and praying for His guidance, help. I am at peace with the present. Of course knowing that, as the doctor says, losing weight can correct the diabetes, I am focused on that. The fact that I am sick and can’t exercise right now is not a good thing. Being stuck at home where it is easy to fall into the old habit of snacking, is not a good thing. But, I am not in this alone.


        I can hear God whispering to me, “You can do this. I’ll help you.” and that is very comforting. Making those little choices, that seemed so huge just two weeks ago is getting easier. I’m finding that I don’t mind giving up some things. I’m also finding things I can eat that I enjoy. I just have to discipline myself to eat small amounts.


        Waiting for my stomach to shrink isn’t fun. Some days I get so hungry I could tear into a bag of chips and eat the whole thing. But I’m learning to seek God’s help right away. Sometimes prayer is all I need to distract myself from those hunger pangs. God is my strength.


        And I can’t wait to see where we are six months from now. Praise God, I am not alone.

Merry Christmas!

Every year I look forward to Christmas; the celebrations, music, cool weather, shopping for gifts, opening gifts and making special treats to share fill the days with joy. This time of year has such a feeling of joy that often I pause to just let it soak in. But what is it that brings this joyful atmosphere?

I’ve often thought that it was the anticipation of gathering with family to share gifts and Christmas dinner. My early years were filled with celebrations; at home and at both grandparents’ homes. We were blessed to live close enough to visit both my Mama's and Daddy's parents homes in one day, but that meant getting up early, not a problem for us children who were anxious to see what Santa had left us.


However, recently the thought occurred to me that the real reason for this feeling of overwhelming joy might come from the true reason for the season, Jesus, the Christ. Isn’t it possible that the presence of Christ is more present in our society during this time? Or at least more noticed. Perhaps He is granting us a great gift during the time of celebration of His birth, letting us feel his nearness.

Imagine Him standing with you in line, waiting and smiling at everyone who is intent on bringing gifts to others. Not everyone allows His peace to reign, but to those of us who seek Him this closeness is a blessing we’ve come to expect daily yes, but even more so during Christmas.

I am going to try and remember to celebrate Him more and spend less time stressing over what society expects or demands. Christmas is becoming less about receiving and more about celebrating Him. For that I am truly thankful.

Merry Christmas everyone! May the presence of the Christ child bless your days and fill you with joy to last the whole year through.

What do You do When Life Gets Rough?

Life gets rough sometimes that is just part of living here in this world. Right now, for instance, I have a broken ankle, strep throat and possibly a sinus infection. I’ve been to the doctor four times in two weeks and am about to go again. On top of this my husband is home recovering from surgery on his foot. The good thing is my husband is home. He is recovered enough to drive me and help me out around here. The bad thing is I can’t just hop out of bed in the morning and get busy with all the things that need to be done around here. Sometimes when those rough times come I try to run or hide from them instead of confronting the underlying issues. I know that there are times when God wants to use these hard times to grow me or to set me back on the right track. What do you do when life gets rough? There have been times when I’ve agonized over why life is the way it is. Why do I have to live so far away from my family? I love being with family. Why does my son and his family have to live so far away? Why can’t my grandchildren come and visit me for a week? Why did God give me work in a career that is so hard to break into? Other times I have escaped into a novel or a movie. I love happy endings and the easiest way to enjoy those is through other people’s stories. Running away is an easy quick fix, but when I take the time to seek God, that is when I’ve felt peace fill me until the anxiety is gone and trust and faith, remain. I don’t always choose to immediately seek God. I’m not sure why that is except that I know the devil attacks through thoughts sometimes and he will always try to lead us away from God. Perhaps this was Paul’s thorn. He does lament about doing what he does not want to do and not doing what he wants to do. I too desire to do what I know will please God but I often do not and that grieves me. Mostly because I know it grieves the Father. So, how to do what I know I should, that is the question. I think that trying to make it a habit by seeking Him first daily would help. If I form that habit by doing those things that would draw me close to God and do them on a consistent basis then when life throws those curve balls I would be ready to catch them and toss them back. Or, trust God to catch them and throw them back for me. I yearn for the day when I can do those things that please our Father, and do them consistently.

When I was a little girl there were times when scripture seemed vague, but I knew, because of my parents and other family members, that I could trust God’s word. As often happens in life, as I grew I began to understand how those words bring peace. It’s the knowing that God is always there and knowing that His word is His promise to us and taking that on faith, holding on to it when we are in the valley and choosing to praise Him because He is.

On this anniversary of 9-11 I pray that His peace has filled the hearts and lives of the survivors. That His peace will continue to lead this nation to do great things for Him and that the evil that is so prevalent in this society will be defeated quickly by our God. May we each see the blessings He has given us and praise Him for it.

Heavenly Father, for your presence in our lives we give you thanks and praise. We praise you for your faithfulness, for your protection, your strength, and for using all for your glory. In Jesus name, amen.

WEDDING BELLES Q&A

Who (or what) influenced you to become a writer? From the time I was a little girl, I always had a creative bent. I loved to sing and dance. I got involved with drama in high school and ended up writing a little play, which we performed. In the late 70s my father moved our family to Los Angeles so that he could get into the movie business, (as a producer). He encouraged me to co-author a screenplay, which I did. In fact, I joined the screenwriter’s guild at age 18. Quite an honor! After I got married and had my children, they showed an interest in theater, too, so I ended up directing and writing musicals for Curtain Call CafĂ© (a Christian theater group). From there, my interests spread to books, and I started publishing fiction for the Christian market. I’ve now published over 80 books, everything from inspirational romance to non-fiction devotionals. I would have to say that my father was a huge influence. He passed away in ’06, but did a lot of writing in his lifetime (both screenplays and lyrics to country songs).

Janice, can you tell us about your latest book project? Yes, I’m so tickled to share the news about my comedic historical, WEDDING BELLES, which is releasing on May 1st. Most of my readers know that I love to write light-hearted tales, and this one is no different! What is the story behind this book? I received a call from editor Susan Downs, who shared an idea she had for a series of books titled “Belles and Whistles.” The books in this series, she explained, must be historical, set in the west, with funny, quirky female characters. Because I write romantic comedy, she thought I would be perfect. I quickly put together a proposal for six books and two were picked up right away: WEDDING BELLES and SLEIGH BELLES. I was commissioned to write WEDDING BELLES first and had a blast doing so! The basic premise for the book was developed before I started writing, but something significant happened along the way to change my plans drastically. I needed a sneaky reason for Lottie Sanders (my heroine) to bring a group of women to Estes Park Colorado as potential brides for the town’s men. About a week after I got the contract for this book I went to a local restaurant that happened to be hosting a melodrama during the dinner hour. As I watched the drama take place, I realized this was my answer! Lottie would write and direct a melodrama to raise funds for Parker Lodge (owned by the young man she secretly loves). Out of that came the rest of this fun, melodramatic tale!

Can you share the “official” synopsis? Lottie Sanders would do just about anything for the man she secretly loves. When Gilbert Parker suggests they put on a play to draw people to his family’s lodge, he begs Lottie to direct it. Lottie agrees to help, but is also worried if they cannot pull this off, Gilbert and his family will lose the lodge — and she will lose him. When the local single men look at this as an opportunity to catch a bride, they secretly hatch their own drama to win the hearts and hands of the actresses.

Why did you choose to write this book under the name Janice Hanna, instead of Janice Thompson? Ooo, great question! I write most of my contemporary novels (like the WEDDINGS BY BELLA series) under Thompson and historicals (like the LOVE FINDS YOU books) under Hanna. My maiden name is Hanna, and I love to write under that name to honor my father, who passed away in ’06. I think he would have been very proud of this particular book.

Is there any connection between the WEDDINGS BY BELLA series and this one? Nope. None whatsoever. Just an interesting coincidence with the titles/names. What’s the deal with the wedding stories? Why do you write so many books with wedding themes? My four daughters (all in their late 20s/early 30s) got married within four years of each other. Talk about wedding chaos! At writer’s conferences I’ve been told to “write what you know” and I certainly know weddings. I worked for a short while as a wedding coordinator and have catered many a wedding and/or bridal shower. It just makes sense to keep my writing wedding-themed, as much as possible!

What are Reviewers saying about WEDDING BELLES? I just found out that Romantic Times gave the book a four-star rating. Woo-hoo! Here’s what the reviewer said: Hanna’s Belles and Whistles series launch is filled with mayhem, drama and, of course, romance. The characters are engaging, witty and willing to do what they need to get what they want. Hanna’s magical touch ensures the book brims with laughter, charm and style. Reviewed By: Patsy Glans What outside interests do you have? People might be surprised to hear this, but I bake cakes. Wedding cakes. Shower cakes. Birthday cakes. You name it, I bake it. In fact, I was once asked by a local restaurant to bake cakes for them.

Cute cover! What’s the story behind it? My heroine, Lottie, is a tomboy. She’s not much for dresses. In fact, she wears pants most of the time. The men in Estes Park make it their mission to get Lottie “gussied up and lookin’ like a lady” as the story progresses. Of course, she’s still pretty attached to her cowgirl boots, so giving those up isn’t an option. I love the cover, because it merges the boots with the wedding dress.

How much research went into this story? I drove to Estes Park while working on this book. Even though I had been many times before, I needed to see the area again so that I could envision it through Lottie’s eyes. The wonderful people at the Estes Park Museum spent a great deal of time with me, talking about the history of the area and pointing me to just the right research books to write. So, I would like to think I’ve got most of the historical elements right. I added the Stanley Hotel, of course, and the Stanley Steamer. But the setting for my story is Parker Lodge (which is completely fictional). Because I’m passionate about photography, I took dozens of pictures of the area. I particularly enjoy my trek up into Rocky Mountain National Park, where I did my best to absorb all I could about the scenery.

What are some of the most interesting things you found about this subject that you weren’t able to use in the story? I learned a lot about the health benefits of living in Colorado! Did you know that Freelan Stanley (the man who designed/built the Stanley Hotel) came to Colorado at his doctor’s recommendation because he had tuberculosis? His health improved dramatically while in Estes Park.

What inspired and surprised you while you were writing the book? I was directly inspired by the team of actors and actresses (here in Texas) who performed the melodrama. That little “spark” of inspiration completely changed the layout of my story and allowed me to tap into one of my strengths: directing. Many people don’t know that I spend part of my time working as a director at a local Christian theater and I love anything and everything about putting on shows.

What do you hope the reader takes away from the story? Two things: I hope they see Lottie as the precious girl she is. I also hope they learn that perceptions are just that. . .perceptions. They’re not fact. Sometimes we look at situations and think we’ve got them figured out. When we give them a second look (and a third) we realize we were dead wrong.

What is the next project you’re working on? I’m currently writing a novel titled LET THEM EAT CAKE, which is part of the new WEDDINGS BY DESIGN series from Revell Publishing. Many of my readers know me as the “Bella” author (from the WEDDINGS BY BELLA series). In this new series, readers can catch up with Bella, DJ and the whole gang!

What do you do when you have to get away from the story for a while? I spend time with my grandbabies. I have six darling grandbabies with number seven on the way. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon? I feel so incredibly blessed at this particular season in my life. I’ve been through several hard things over the past several years, but through it all, God has been right there, walking me through one book project, then another. He has used the writing to bring healing in so many areas, and I’m so grateful for that! I’ve made Ephesians 3:20 – 21 my life verse: Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. God IS able to do so much more than I could ask or think, and He keeps proving that to me. In spite of any weakness on my part (and there’s plenty, trust me), He entrusts me with this gift (writing). I will use it to His glory as long as He allows.

A Review of "Special Delivery" by: Kathi Macias

Special Delivery by: Kathi Macias is a tale of redeeming love through the violence and terror of sexual slavery. Girls and young women who’ve been stolen from their homes or sold by their own families suffer the horrors of back street bordellos. Mara has been rescued from such a situation but is hated by her Uncle who kept her prisoner for years. Now, in prison himself, he would like nothing more than to see his niece suffer.

Jonathan and Leah are working on their schooling. Jonathan attends Bible College and Leah has hopes of attending the same college after graduation. They’ve helped and prayed for Mara, wondering what happened to the beautiful young woman. As their paths cross again none has any idea of the dangers to come.

Ms. Macias weaves a story which could have been torn from the pages of newspapers around the world. Threading the horrors of sexual slavery with the love of a God who seeks those who may choose to trust Him, Ms. Macias does an admirable job with a difficult subject. Relying on God's Peace

Psalm 12:7-8 You, LORD, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked, who freely strut about when what is vile is honored by the human race.

Recent events are causing some Christians to fear the future. But Christians are told not to fear. (Phil. 4:6-7)

So, what are we to do? Seek God. Pray. Keep a close relationship to our Father and listen to His quiet voice. Remember the voice that is loud and causes anxiety is not from God. God is quiet and his voice brings peace. You can be sure of what to do when His peace is felt.

When you hear others say; do this or do that, pray. Then listen to God’s voice. Where He leads, His peace will be there with you.
You can trust Him.

May this week, this month, this year, this age bring blessing upon blessing to you and your families.

A Christmas Gift

We hold tightly with both hands to this life. Whether it's because we don’t want to miss a thing or we are afraid to let go, neither is beneficial to us.

We want to live the way WE want to live and we want to do the things we want to do in the way we want to do them. This isn’t just evidenced by the “Me Generation” but through the generations. It is natural to want things our way. After all who knows better than we what is best for us?

We wander this path called life with the shortsighted, tunnel vision of a sheep. Ignoring bright trails that branch off of our easy path we miss out on the best of life because we have not given all of our life to Him to whom it belongs.

Those who keep their life will lose it, those who lose their life, for my sake will keep it. Luke 9:24

This Christmas why not give yourself a gift by giving away yourself completely to God? Give Him your life, soul, heart, wants, emotions, health, expectations, hopes, love, pain, future, past, present. Give Him every thought, plan, deed, word, need and watch what He will do with it. This does not mean neglecting yourself. You must, with the wisdom He provides, care for yourself in every area so that you will be available for His use and blessing.

Lay yourself at the foot of the manger this Christmas and quietly wait for the joy that is sure to come.

I am ready to lose my life. To give all of it to God so that He might be glorified. This Christmas I can give myself a gift that will, I expect, enrich my life beyond what I could ever imagine.

I wish you all a joy filled Christmas and a year of blessing from our loving Lord.

What to do? How to go on?

When the ground is shaken and scorched and burned what can you do but wait on God to repair and bring renewed life?

On this anniversary of 9-11 my thoughts are on healing.

We tend to mourn our losses, for days, weeks, months or years wishing for what cannot be. But if we stop and turn that mourning into gratitude for what we’ve had then the possibilities for a life of happiness, purpose and joy are boundless.

Yes, we have all lost loved ones or at least they’ve gone on ahead as the old timers say. We’ve lost; dreams, faith in mankind, direction, health, love, homes, jobs, etc…. But if we think of all we have because of those blessings then we should not despair but have faith that God will continue, in His goodness, to bless and direct us. If we feel lost and alone all we need to do is seek Him. He has the answer and He knows exactly what we need for every such moment in our lives.

May today be a new beginning for each of us.

We Are Accountable

Jeremiah 17:5-10 NIV

This is what the Lord says:

“Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the Lord. He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in salt land where no one lives.

But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream, it’s leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

”I the lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.”


We must be careful what we set our hearts on. Is my focus on what God wants for me or on gaining wealth and possessions? Things only give pleasure for awhile then they lose their appeal.

I am taking inventory of what consumes my thoughts and energies. I must put God first or nothing else will matter. If I am not in God’s will, living as I know He wants, then nothing I do is for good. It will not bear fruit for God’s kingdom and that is what I want.

My heart longs to be closer to God but knowing me I know that I am easily distracted. If I allow distractions and ignore the Lord my days will be filled with useless things. Knowing I must answer to Him I pray that He will keep me on track, in His will and help me to change what I am doing.

Sometimes life takes over and while we are busy just surviving what is being thrown at us we get off track and begin living for ourselves instead of God. It is during those times that my work suffers both housework and writing. It is also during those times that I slip back into the habit of filling hours with shopping and buying things I don’t need. Oh, they are always on sale or clearance. But buying at 50 to 90% off when I don’t really need those things is still a waste of money. Also I must consider the time I waste. Running the roads, alone, keeps me from focusing on the Lord and what He wants in my life.

I must be honest with God, he already knows my heart. He knows what is on my mind. He knows if I am honest, deceitful, hurting, grieving, floundering, etc... Being honest with God and with myself is very important to becoming the person He wants me to be.

Father, forgive me for letting things get in the way of my relationship with you. Forgive me for neglecting you and for letting my work suffer also. Cleanse and heal me I pray so that I may be of use to You. Keep me on your path Lord and use me in some small way for Your glory. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

How Can I Deal With Bad Changes?

I’m wondering today, “How did our world change so quickly and for the worse?” Much of what has happened to America started fifty years ago, when I was too young to even know changes were coming.

It would be easy to get distracted by thoughts of what ifs, but I would rather think about what I can do today to make a difference in my world.

Prayer is the key; as I seek God’s will in my life and His blessings and protection for my family I continue in; prayer for His leading in the lives of governing officials, causing them to do what is right in God’s eyes. Prayer for all illegal aliens in this country and those trying to cross the borders of America; that God would save them from sin and use them for His glory both here and in their home lands. Prayer for our elderly; that the people of our country would give them the honor they deserve and allow them the dignity of living a life of peace and fulfillment without fear. Prayer for His ministers over all the earth, that they and their families would be protected and that God would bless their work for Him and use them for His glory. Praying in Jesus name that He may be glorified.

I must keep an open heart and be in constant communication with God so that I don’t miss an opportunity to encourage or help others who may be worried or living in fear because of the economy and the lack of caring of our government officials.

There is hope for America and it begins with God.

2Chronicles 7:14 …if my people, who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven. I will forgive their sins and heal their land.

God’s promises never fail. God never fails. If things are bad we must look to ourselves for the problem and to God for the solution. Let us stand and be counted among the faithful of God.

If more bad change is coming, if we are about to lose our freedoms as Christians, if the end is near then we must pray continually and choose to trust God in all things. May God bless you.

Fear

Today I am reminded of God’s abundant love for us.

While reading my Bible study, “Fresh Brewed Life” by Nichole Johnson, I was struck by the realization that the thing that keeps me from thriving in life is fear. I realized that fear of being unable to shine for Him often holds me back and this also causes other fears to rear their ugly heads.

Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of being all I can be, fear of not being enough; etc….. It is strange that this happens, for I KNOW that God is in control of my life. I know that He deserves so much more of me and yet I allow fear to invade and hold me back.

Today I ask God to remove every fear from my life except my fear/awe of Him.

Why Wait?

God has everything we need and yet we wait, sometimes until the very last moment, to ask for help. We wait until we’ve exhausted every other resource, all our ideas, every other option before seeking Him.

Our God is a gracious God. He watches us, cares for us, loves us and provides for our every need. And yet, He allows us to try it on our own first. Very often, but for the prayers of our parents, grandparents, friends, spouses, siblings and children we would be out of luck simply because we did not ask.

Matthew 7:7 says; you receive not because you ask not…

James 4:3 says; When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

So, I assume that if I am not receiving what I want either my motives are wrong or I have not asked. I long to pray with other warriors, agreeing, for God’s intervention in our land.

May God rule with His mighty hand, may His love sustain us, may His presence guide and protect us. May we be His completely and speak to everyone of His love and abiding faithfulness.

Families, I challenge you to pray together for our nation to return to God. Ask the Father to control our government and cause them to do what is right. Pray for all Christians to be strong in faith and outspoken about God’s love and faithfulness. Seek Him in all things and praise His name all day long.

Goodbye Regrets!

If I like who I am, how can I regret the choices I’ve made?

The main characters in Nicholas Sparks’ “The Last Song” find, through their journey that the choices they made shaped who they are. What I have to decide is, if this is true. (Wonderful book!)

And if it is true, since I do like who I am, why should I allow regret to hold me back? I’ve heard it said, “Don’t look back.” But a certain amount of looking back can help us discern where we are and if we are still on track. Looking back can also help us see where our bad choices have allowed us to grow.

Yesterday I decided I will no longer allow regret to hold me captive as it has in the past. Stopping to look and lingering over disappointments or dashed dreams does me no good. If I don’t allow myself some humanity, human failings, and extend the grace to myself to make & recover from mistakes then I will never accomplish the great things I could and I am not able to minister/witness as I should.

So, no more regrets. Oh, I’m not happy that I’ve failed so often but I will allow myself to learn from those things and, move on already! Being held back is so stifling. It stops the creative flow, steals joy, hinders our Christian witness, builds a wall between us & God as well as between us and our family members and is a waste of time.

I am thankful that God put people in my life that He can use to bring me a message. Becky, Carol, Cathy, Shirley, Stacy & Linda share; books, Bible study, thoughts and prayers, give hugs and encouragement……I could go on and on.

Thank You, Lord, for putting Christian women in my life, friends & family who help me as I grow. Bless each one in a special way today and always. In Jesus name, amen.

Spiritual Inventory

The movie, “Fireproof” introduced “The Love Dare”, a devotional and marriage help book. I think I’ve been doing the love dare off and on for as long as I’ve been married. When things would get tense between my husband and I prayer always brought us back to unity.

If marriage is to survive all that this world throws at us, we must stand united with our spouse and God. Otherwise we don’t have much hope of growing old together, much less have a happy family life. Without God we cannot treat our sweethearts as they deserve to be treated. Without Him our homes become a place where chaos and anger reign.

Listening to John Waller sing “While I’m Waiting” I wonder if I am doing all those things; praying, serving, worshiping…. Is there something in my life that needs to be removed so I can do those things with a pure heart?

It is strange how when life is stressful we seek God more fully, praying and seeking God daily. But when the stress is over we tend to revert to bad habits such as putting our wants first, pushing prayer and God to the back of our mind and the bottom of our schedule.

Spiritual leaders encourage us to do an inventory of our Spiritual life once a year but I think it would be better if I searched my heart more often. Perhaps then I wouldn’t tend to get off track so easily. So, for the rest of the week; Bible study, prayer, and journaling about where I am spiritually.

Another Year Blessed

I could say another year older but why go there?

Birthdays make me introspective. I don’t mean just taking inventory of the past year but a slideshow of pictures flashing through my brain; our boys when they were young, our grandkids when they were little, my sweetie and me when we were newlyweds, my parents when I was young, places we lived and things we did. I’ve really had an amazing life and I don’t feel like I’m half done here on earth. I would love to live another fifty (something) years, if I could be in good health and able to give to those around me.

There are regrets, sure, but mostly I am filled with gratitude for the blessings God has bestowed. Christian parents, a loving family life, good school friends, my high school sweetheart who became my husband thirty six years ago, two sweet and handsome boys who grew into honorable Christian men, a beautiful daughter-in-love, four wonderful, beautiful, handsome and talented grandchildren, good sweet friends who stick with and pray for me, and the list could go on…..

With all of that to be thankful for still there is more. That I have a heavenly Father who loves me and keeps me on track, always there to give me what I need, always calling me back when I get off track, always faithful and ever present. That would have to be the biggest blessing for without Him none of the other would be possible.

Thank you, Lord, for another year. Thank you for salvation through Jesus your son. Thank you for a life filled with blessing and purpose. Thank you for using me to minister to others. May all be for your glory Lord. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

Life is NOT Fair!

It’s not fair. I’m finally old enough to know; what is worth doing, what is worth enjoying and I am limited by how much my body can take. It isn’t that I miss used my body when I was young. I was pretty careful, no drugs, alcohol or tobacco. A little too much Dr. Pepper but I got lots of exercise and had no problem with weight until we moved away from home and I got lonely and homesick and turned to food for comfort.

We’ve all heard the saying, “Getting old is the pits.” It really is!

Think about it; women go through the pain and/or discomfort of childbirth and all that goes with it. When we are past our child bearing years, menopause sets in. My husband says it’s called that because men better pause before doing or saying anything. It brings a heightened sensitivity to EVERYTHING! Mood swings, the kind we had with our (ahem! Men be prepared…) “monthly” otherwise known as a week of punishment for us women and anyone around us, turn into moments of anger, crying and venting followed immediately by guilt for hurting our loved ones. It is as if a crazy person takes over your body and you have no control over what they say or do to your loved ones. Then there are the night sweats and hot flashes that hang on for months and years. No longer can I enjoy that wonderful hot cup of coffee in the morning if the thermometer is above freezing. I can’t enjoy going to flea markets or garage sales in the spring and summer. And forget anything resembling an amusement park if it is outdoors.

Added to all of that awhile back I started having trouble with my feet. I had to buy those expensive inner soles, not the outrageously priced ones which cost well over $450.00 and can only be bought after seeing your doctor & paying, a specialist & paying and getting a prescription, the $49.50 pair. After wearing them for two weeks my feet felt better. Then one morning I woke up at 4:30 am with a cramp. I hopped out of bed which twisted my knee. For days; I babied my knee taking extra care when walking or moving. I took ibuprofen to keep the inflammation down and finally I felt good. This morning I went outside, planted three plants I'd bought, two of which were in a very sad state, and when I finished I drove into town for some much needed rest, shopping. :-) When I got out of the truck I realize my feet hurt again, and my knee feels weird UGH!! Why can’t I just do what needs to be done without having to suffer for it?

Okay, maybe I should have put a little forethought into it, been wise and used another method to tackle the job. But really! Surely I should be able to enjoy the work without having to suffer for weeks. Sigh……

No, life isn’t fair, but it is blessed. I am blessed; to live in this place, to have gained the wisdom to know there must be a better way if it hurts this much, to have the joy of working outside, to enjoy the provision of flowering plants that will one day be covered with beautiful blooms, to enjoy the love of a wonderful family, to have friends who sick by me in spite of me, to realize I can call on God for help with any need. Life is indeed blessed. May you feel His blessed presence today no matter where you are or what you are doing. God bless!
